Meta also sells a pricier Display model with an in-lens screen and a wrist-worn Neural Band for gesture control, aimed at navigation, captions, and reading messages at a glance. It’s a different product at a different price, and most buyers don’t need it.

The ambition is to replace the keyboard and mouse with thought. Sabi’s CEO Rahul Chhabra describes a “brain foundation model” trained on roughly 100,000 hours of neural data from 100 volunteers. The launch target is about 30 words per minute, slower than typing but unprecedented for a non-invasive cap.

For accessibility, the promise is real. A wearable brain interface could give people with motor impairments a way to communicate without the risks of an implant like Neuralink. For everyone else, it’s a glimpse of where input might go.

I’m filing this under “promising, unproven.” There are no independent benchmarks, no price, and no shipping product. Sabi is aiming for a consumer beanie by the end of 2026, with a baseball-cap version to follow. Reading scalp signals through skin and bone is hard (especially when people are constantly moving), and the privacy questions around neural data are wide open.

This week I’ve been listening to the audiobook for AI First: A Playbook for a Future-Proof Business and Brand, where the authors reach for an awkward but interesting term to describe what happens when humans and AI work together in an ongoing conversation.

They call it a centaur, borrowing the half-human, half-horse figure from Greek myth. The word is clumsy and maybe someone will dream up something better, but the idea behind it is simple: you and the machine are not competitors; you are one unit with two parts.

The term comes from chess. After Garry Kasparov lost to Deep Blue in 1997, he started pairing human players with chess engines and having them compete as a team. The productivity layer is where it tries to earn its keep. Bee ties into Gmail, Google Calendar, and contacts, so a recorded conversation can become a reminder, a task, or a follow-up suggestion. After a busy day, the daily recap of commitments is the feature that is the most useful.

Privacy is handled in an unusual way: Bee discards the audio after transcription and processes speech into text rather than storing recordings. That’s reassuring on one hand and limiting on the other, since you can’t replay anything to check accuracy.

The rough edges are real. Transcripts can be messy, you often have to label speakers yourself, the sport band is flimsy, and Amazon owning an always-listening wrist device gives plenty of people pause. The advertised battery is seven days, but UMEVO’s testing put active-listening use closer to 1.5 to 2 days.

The first-gen limits are clear. Framing drifts when you sit (the chest angle wanders toward the ceiling), low-light photos are weak, several AI features are still labelled beta, and the results are inconsistent: sometimes a great recap, sometimes a clip that shows nothing. The Exciting Future Of AI Wearables

Everything above is just the opening act. The companies that will decide whether AI wearables become as normal as smartwatches, or fade like the overhyped Humane AI Pin, weird-looking Google Glass or viral disaster Friend (the original startup of Omi founder), are only now stepping onto the stage. By the end of 2027, the four largest names in tech will all have skin in this game.

OpenAI is the wild card. After buying Jony Ive’s hardware startup io for about $6.4 billion, it confirmed at Davos through policy chief Chris Lehane that its first device is on track to be unveiled in the second half of 2026. Reporting points to a screenless, voice-first companion built around “calm computing,” with an earbud-style prototype codenamed Sweetpea. Sam Altman has said the goal is to ship 100 million units faster than anyone has shipped a new product before. If the iPhone’s designer can do for AI what he did for the phone, this is the device that could reset the whole category.

Google recently announced at their annual I/O conference in May 2026 that it will soon release Android XR glasses built with Samsung, with frames from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, audio-first models shipping in the fall and a display version on the 2027 roadmap. Gemini runs the show, handling navigation, translation, and notifications, and the glasses work with iPhones as well as Android. Samsung’s own Galaxy Glasses (codename Jinju) are part of the same push, with luxury Gucci frames from Kering due in 2027.

Apple is the slow, deliberate one that has the most potential. Mark Gurman’s reporting in his Power On newsletter says Apple pushed its first AI glasses to late 2027, with a cheaper model slipping further still. Apple is rarely first, and it doesn’t need to be. When it arrives with iPhone-native glasses, it tends to define what “good” looks like for everyone else, the way it did with the smartwatch.

Meta isn’t standing still while the others catch up. It already sells the best-known AI glasses, and its Connect event in September 2026 is expected to bring Ray-Ban Gen 3 frames with a faster chip and Live AI that lasts hours instead of minutes. Further out, a consumer version of its true-AR Orion glasses is expected in the 2027 to 2028 window.

Put those four timelines together and the picture is clear. The devices in this guide are the ones you can actually buy and use today, and several are genuinely useful right now. But the potentially revolutionary AI wearables, the ones that could replace the phone in your pocket rather than complement it, are still 12 to 24 months out. Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon told Axios that AI glasses shipments could climb from around 10 million a year to 100 million by 2027.

My advice is if a device here solves a real problem for you now, buy it and get the benefit today. Just don’t spend like you’re locking in for a few years like an expensive smartphone, because the ground under this category is about to move fast.
